This is our team meeting planning the silent auction scheduled for January 17, 2010
Tamra Boettcher, APRN the newest addition to the team. She got us a football signed by Bo Pelini and Tom Osborn for the silent auction.

Jody Dreifurst, RN is an OR nurse from the Columbus Hospital. She has a lot of OR experience and we're counting on her to keep the OR organized.

Sue Tillinghast, LPN - Sue works as a clinic nurse at Family Physicians Group in Lincoln. She lived in Columbus until 2001. She and Dr. Novotny did a surgical mission to Ecuador in 1999. She has traveled to Chili the Gulf Coast on mission trips since moving to Lincoln. Nila Novotny, MD


Katrina Spies, RN, works at the Columbus Community Hospital in the recovery room. This is her first mission trip. Karl Tillinghast is Sue's husband and plans to help out with construction and repairs in any way needed. He helped plan and obtain the tools we are taking to Puerto Cabezas and may be otherwise known as Hardware Hank.
John Novotny is Dr. Novotny's husband and will be working alongside Karl doing whatever repairs or maintenance needed. Like the good farm boy he is he has taken apart an old autoclave, fixed it and now has a functional machine even if it is a bit old. John is also the logistics go-to person who has a handle on the finances and travel arrangements. He's a great guy to travel with.

Dean Athey, CRNA has worked in anesthesia for about 30 years and brings with him a lot of experience and organizational skills.
Carolyn Athey - She has worked in nursing as an assistant to urology and will be assisting in surgery in PC as well.
Janet Loseke, BSN is the head nurse on 2nd floor of Columbus Hospital. She brings a lot of nursing experience and an adventursome spirit to the team.

We received supplies from the Sisters of Mercy in Missouri yesterday and a big box of toothbrushes and toothpaste to take with us to give away to patients. The medicine has been ordered. We're making progress.

Melissa Shemek, MSN - Melissa works in the NICU at Cornell University Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She grew up in Columbus, but has lived and worked in NYC since 2005. She teaches nursing student on their pedicatric rotations one day a week. She is bringing her pediatric experience to help out in PC.

Peter E. Diedrichsen, MD - He is an Ophthalmologist who has practiced in Columbus since 1982. This is his first medical mission and will help in any way needed.


We have now added Dr. Pete Diedrichsen and Melissa, MSN to our team to replace the Stadlers. They are sending in their paperwork and seem very enthusiastic about joining our mission.

The face of our team has changed. Dr. Stadler and his wife, Jenn are no longer able to go so we've added Dr. Diedrichsen. The rest of our team consists of me, Dr. Novotny, my husband John, Dean & Carolyn Athey, Sue & Karl Tillinghast, Janet Loseke, Deb Nekl, Jody Dreifurst and Katrina Spies. We have ordered all our medication and made lists of instruments and placed orders for other supplies. We're planning a silent auction on January 17th at the Eagles Club. NN

Columbus Medical Mission Team Spaghetti feed

COLUMBUS TELEGRAM -- The Columbus Medical Mission Team will hold a fundraising event from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Federated Church, 2704 15th St.Event will include a spaghetti feed for a freewill donation. Christmas cookies will be for sale and there will also be a meat raffle.

The Columbus Medical Mission Team members will be traveling to Nicaragua Feb. 18-27, 2010.Team members include Dr. Nila and John Novotny, Dr. Pete Diedrichsen, Dean and Carolyn Athey, Ram Boettcher, Jody Dreifurst, Janet Loseke, Melissa Shemek, Katrina Spies and Karl and Sue Tillinghast.
